A calm, gluten-free-friendly breakfast spot
Why we visited
Finding a breakfast spot that truly understands gluten-free needs isn’t always easy, especially when you’re travelling with a coeliac child. Many places offer “gluten-free options,” but the level of awareness around cross-contamination can vary widely.
We visited Roots in Upminster after hearing good things about their gluten-free breakfasts, and it quickly became a place we felt comfortable returning to.
First impressions
The atmosphere at Roots is relaxed, friendly, and unhurried. It has a local, welcoming feel rather than a busy chain-restaurant energy, which made it easier for our child to settle in.
Staff interactions felt natural and patient, with no sense of being rushed.
Gluten-free experience
What stood out most was their understanding of gluten-free needs.
They were:
- clear about what could be made gluten free
- confident when answering questions
- comfortable adapting menu items
The breakfast options felt generous and satisfying, rather than an afterthought or a “substitute” version of the main menu.
Most importantly, the experience felt reassuring, not stressful.
Environment and comfort
For neurodivergent children, the environment matters just as much as the food.
At Roots:
- noise levels were manageable
- the pace of service felt calm
- the setting felt predictable and easy to navigate
It’s the kind of place where you can sit, regulate, and enjoy a meal without feeling overwhelmed.
What worked well
- Strong gluten-free breakfast options
- Staff comfortable discussing dietary needs
- Calm, welcoming atmosphere
- Local, unhurried feel
